From Cameron
Hey folks! Well it was my 56th birthday yesterday. Thanks for all of the gifts you sent me, your generosity is overwhelming, but really, as I tell Ray every week, the only gift I need is your never-ending love and devotion.
I spent my birthday doing 5 hours of kung fu in the morning and early afternoon, then went to pick up a leg of lamb to roast and made one of my sourdough loaves. Hunter came up for dinner and a game of chess and then we had our normal breakfast this morning because it’s his and Taylor’s birthday today.
Every year on my birthday I like to thank my mother, without whom I wouldn’t be here. My dad’s been dead for 25 years, so he’s not around to thank for his contribution.
I feel lucky to still be around at 56, four years older than my dad when he died, and I’m in the best shape of my life, with the body of a Spartan warrior and the peace of mind of a Zen monk. Married to the love of my life, three great sons, and I get to read books for a living. I’m very lucky indeed.
My Thought For The Day
He stepped up to one of the reporters. “Suppose we, take you as an example. Your name is Rogers, is it not? Very well, Rogers, you are a space-time event having duration four ways. You are not quite six feet tall, you are about twenty inches wide and perhaps ten inches thick. In time, there stretches behind you more of this space-time event reaching to perhaps nineteen-sixteen, of which we see a cross-section here at right angles to the time axis, and as thick as the present. At the far end is a baby, smelling of sour milk and drooling its breakfast on its bib. At the other end lies, perhaps, an old man someplace in the nineteen-eighties. Imagine this space-time event which we call Rogers as a long pink worm, continuous through the years, one end at his mother’s womb, the other at the grave. It stretches past us here and the cross-section we see appears as a single discrete body. But that is illusion. There is physical continuity to this pink worm, enduring through the years. As a matter of fact there is physical continuity in, this concept to the entire race, for these pink worms branch off from other pink worms. In this fashion the race is like a vine whose branches intertwine and send out shoots. Only by taking a cross-section of the vine would we fall into the error of believing that the shootlets were discrete individuals.”

Life of Caesar · Published 28 September 2026 The Dagger Men – Vespasian #28This episode we’re deep into Josephus on the Sicarii, the original cloak-and-dagger assassination squad – literally, they hid curved daggers under their cloaks – who spent the Jewish-Roman War killing other Jews for not being Jewish enough…. according to Josephus, who is of course completely unbiased. We also end up somewhere unexpected: how Jewish civil war, Jew-on-Jew violence, and the trauma of a civilisation being flattened might explain rather a lot about where Christianity came from. The post The Dagger… |

Cold War · Published 30 September 2026 Cold War 317: The John Wayne ComplexThe CIA’s original plan for Cuba was a slow, subtle guerrilla operation…. then someone started adding things. A combined air and sea assault. A march on Havana. Possibly US troops. By October 1960, what began as a quiet covert infiltration had turned into D-Day Jr., and nobody seemed to notice the plan had completely gotten away from them. |

Renaissance · Published 7 October 2026 The Smell of Evil – The Renaissance #247We’re deep in the witchy end of the Renaissance now…. women falling into trances, communing with the dead, healing the sick, and charging for it, which honestly sounds like a pretty solid business model. Meanwhile men called the Căluşari are dressing as women, leaping around with swords, and apparently killing people with no legal consequences whatsoever. The church is not thrilled about any of this, but it’s been going on for thousands of years and a strongly worded sermon isn’t… |
